A fat-free mass result is larger than a skeletal muscle estimate because muscle is only one part of fat-free tissue. Renaming fat-free mass as muscle would make the result sound more precise than the method allows.
What the waist equation uses
The Body Numeral calculator uses the Series 2 equations published by Heymsfield and colleagues in 2020. Those equations use weight, height, age, age squared, and waist circumference. The source reports separate equations for men and women in its non-Hispanic White and non-Hispanic Black study groups. With the default rounded-coefficient option, Body Numeral applies the two published equations that match the selected sex category. It shows the outputs as the first and second population equations.

- The selected sex category determines which pair of published equations applies.
Body Numeral averages the two equation outputs for its main comparison. That average is a product convention. The paper did not validate it as a new combined equation. The calculator also offers a high-precision coefficient option observed in other calculators. Those longer coefficients are not independently sourced to the paper, so treat that option as a calculator convention rather than a published equation.
How the estimate is made
- The calculator converts the entered measurements to kilograms and centimetres.
- It applies the selected rounded or high-precision coefficient set for the chosen sex category.
- It displays both equation results so the difference remains visible.
- It averages the two estimates for its main comparison value.
- It divides that value by body weight to show a percentage.
The body-fat option provides separate composition context. It does not supply the skeletal muscle estimate. If you enter a known body-fat percentage, the calculator uses it to divide body weight into estimated fat and fat-free components. If you do not enter one, it uses a separate BMI-based body-fat equation for that comparison.
The equation can return a precise decimal, but the source data do not support treating that decimal as directly measured tissue. Read the rounded kilograms, the two source-equation values, and the method label together.
Keep the source limits beside the number
The study used 12,330 non-Hispanic White and Black adults from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. The authors state that use in other groups, highly trained athletes, people with catabolic illness, and repeated change over time needs more evaluation. The reference process measured appendicular lean soft tissue with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. It then used a conversion equation derived from magnetic resonance imaging data to estimate total-body skeletal muscle. This was not a direct whole-body muscle measurement.
Do not use this estimate to diagnose muscle loss or to apply a clinical cutoff from another measurement method. A result can describe the equation output without establishing health, strength, or change in muscle tissue.
Make a later comparison repeatable
- Use the same waist landmark and tape procedure.
- Keep the same sex category and coefficient option.
- Save the raw weight, height, age, waist, date, and units.
- Review the input measurements before you interpret a changed estimate.
- Keep results from a scan, bioimpedance device, or another equation in separate series.
Open the muscle mass calculator when you want to inspect the arithmetic. Use the tape-measure guide before you record a new waist value. The result is most useful when its method stays attached to it.
Common questions
Is fat-free mass the same as muscle mass?
No. Body Numeral's fat-free mass result also includes water, bone, organs, and other non-fat tissue. Skeletal muscle is one part of it. Other devices can use a different definition for a lean-mass label.
Does a smaller waist always mean more muscle?
No. Waist is one input in this population equation. The result does not prove that an individual has more muscle.
Can I compare the result with a smart scale or scan?
Keep each method separate. Different devices and equations can define and estimate muscle differently.
