RMR means resting metabolic rate. Research sources also use resting energy expenditure, or REE. The terms rate and expenditure are often used for the same daily resting-energy value. BMR and RMR are close, but the test conditions are not identical. Keep the exact label used by the test or equation instead of silently renaming the result.

TDEE includes resting energy use, the thermic effect of food, and physical activity. The thermic effect of food is the energy used to digest, absorb, and process food. Physical activity includes planned exercise and ordinary movement such as walking, standing, home tasks, and work. Resting energy expenditure is usually the largest part, but the size of each part varies.
This is why a resting result and a whole-day result should not match. It is also why a change in an activity assumption can move a TDEE estimate without changing the resting equation.
Separate a measurement from an estimate
Indirect calorimetry estimates energy use from oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. A resting test needs a controlled protocol. A systematic review found that food, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, recent activity, the rest period, and measurement duration can affect the result. A number from a laboratory is therefore useful only with its protocol and conditions.
A calculator uses a prediction equation instead. The Mifflin-St Jeor equations, for example, were developed from measured resting energy expenditure in 498 adults. They predict a group pattern from inputs such as weight, height, age, and the equation category. The output can be a practical estimate, but it is not an indirect-calorimetry measurement and it does not show a personal error range.
- Keep the equation name with a calculated result.
- Keep the protocol and test conditions with a measured result.
- Do not use extra decimal places as proof of accuracy.
- Do not subtract two unlike methods and call the difference a change in metabolism.

The 2023 adult option in BodyNumeral's TDEE calculator uses the 2023 EER equations directly for ages 20–80. It does not calculate RMR and then apply a generic activity multiplier. The selected activity category is already part of the equation, so do not multiply the result by another activity factor or add exercise energy again.
The same TDEE calculator also has separate 2005 source-equation paths for infants and toddlers under age 3 and for people aged 3–85. Its 2005 compatibility option preserves a separate comparison convention. Each path has its own inputs and limits. Pregnancy and breastfeeding inputs are outside this calculator. Use the RMR calculator when you need a resting estimate. Use the TDEE calculator when you need a whole-day estimate from the selected edition. If two websites disagree, compare their equations and activity methods before you compare the displayed numbers.
Keep a comparison repeatable
- Write down whether the result is BMR, RMR, REE, TDEE, TEE, or EER.
- Save the equation, inputs, units, activity category, and date.
- Compare like with like: the same method, conditions, and input definitions.
- Create a new record when the equation or activity assumption changes.
- Use a qualified professional when an energy estimate affects personal nutrition or medical care.
These numbers describe methods and estimates. They do not diagnose a slow or fast metabolism, prove a maintenance intake, or provide a personal nutrition prescription.
Common questions
Are BMR and RMR the same?
They describe closely related resting energy use, but BMR has stricter test conditions. In everyday calculator language, the terms are often used loosely. Keep the method name and equation with the result.
Is TDEE just BMR multiplied by an activity factor?
Some calculators estimate it that way, but not all do. BodyNumeral's 2023 adult TDEE option includes an activity category inside its EER equation, so do not multiply that result by another activity factor. The calculator's separate 2005 source-equation paths have their own activity coefficients and limits.
Does a calculator measure my metabolism?
No. A calculator predicts energy use from an equation and your inputs. Indirect calorimetry can measure resting energy use under controlled conditions, while doubly labeled water can measure total energy expenditure over time in free-living research settings.
